What is Agile Scrum?

In the modern world, there is just one thing that is not changing:  that is change itself. A changing world demands a flexible and changing approach. This constant change requires an agile way of thinking which helps you keep up with the changes.

The Agile Way of Thinking

The agile way of thinking is best known in the field of software development, but the principles are increasingly being applied to other types of projects. Agile development advocates:

1. Adaptive planning: if reality disagrees with your plan, change the plan.
2. Evolutionary development and early delivery: to reduce risk, projects are divided into smaller, more manageable pieces.
3. Continuous improvement: lessons learned are shared as early as possible.

Agile is fast becoming a regular project management technique. Successful companies that follow the agile philosophy include Spotify, Google, and ING.

ING Embraces Agile and DevOps

In 2015, ING shifted its traditional organization to an agile model. ‘The ING Way of Working’ improved time to market, increased productivity, and stimulated employee engagement. As part of this shift, product development and IT operations were integrated (DevOps). This enabled the Dutch banking group to develop innovative new product features.

What Is Scrum?

Scrum is the most-used agile methodology. Small, multidisciplinary teams break their work into actions that can be completed within fixed-duration cycles called sprints. They track progress and re-plan in daily, 15-minute, stand-up meetings and collaborate to deliver the product/goal of every sprint. JIRA and Trello are two platforms used to implement scrum.

Many people use the terms ‘agile’ and ‘scrum’ interchangeably, but this is not correct. ‘Agile’ is the broader, over-reaching philosophy. ‘Scrum’ is just one of several techniques that can be used to implement an agile framework.

An alternative for scrum is Kanban. Kanban means ‘signboard’ in Japanese. Kanban is a scheduling system for lean manufacturing and just-in-time manufacturing.
